Opinel No 6 Carbon Steel Folding knife Reviews
15 of 15 people found the following review helpful Opinel- simple, timeless, no frills performance., Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Opinel No 6 Carbon Steel Folding knife (Misc.) I have several Opinels and love them all. The six is a good compromise with a somewhat larger blade, suited for general utility or impromptu use as a dining knife, while still being discrete. The quality is improved on the ones I purchased in France nearly twenty years ago, with the virobloc rotating collar lock now being able to secure the blade in the closed position for an extra degree of safety. One of the nice things about the simple but reliable construction is the low weight. The low weight coupled with the smooth shape of the handles, make the six very comfortable to carry in a hip or front pocket, in contrast to the modern pseudo-tactical folders that rule the market. The blade is made of high carbon tool steel, as other reviewers and the product description note, this classic steel is not rust proof, and will take a patina or mottled stained appearance in regular use, which most of us believe just adds to the character. I have carried my #6 pocket knife for years, and though it has developed a nice patina (as any carbon blade will) it is still able to take an edge as well today as it did ten years ago. I also have a #8 and it is equally at home in my pocket, but I prefer the #6 for everyday carry, just a little more discrete. Being in the military, I have drawers full of multi-tools and pocket knives, but I will always carry Opinels, just the perfect single blade pocket knife! 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful Opinels are decent knifes, but this one is an awkward size., By mbj (MD United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Opinel No 6 Carbon Steel Folding knife (Misc.) Opinel makes a decent knife of a distinctive design and relatively good quality for the money. They're simple, quite light, feel like a regular knife when locked open, and have a historical aspect that is appealing. I like them and own a few. That said, I find the #6 to be a little too large for carrying in my pocket every day, but a little too small for general use. If you want a pocket knife Opinel, I'd recommend buying smaller one, realizing that it won't have the lock. If you want a knife for camping, gardening, or other general use, only carried in the pocket some of the time, I'd look at the #8, either the classic or #8 Garden Knife (which I like). Whether to get a stainless steel or carbon steel blade is a personal choice. The carbon blade should hold a slightly better edge. However the Opinel SS blades are fine and a little less maintenance. In retrospect, I wish I had gotten one of the smaller Opinels with the understanding that it wouldn't have the... Read more |
