3.0 out of 5 stars Great product, but first consider these two things..., September 7, 2008
This review is from: Leatherman 830678 Charge ALX with Leather Sheath and Gift Tin (Tools & Home Improvement)
A beautifully crafted tool with great functionality and durability. However, there were only two issues I wanted to address for potential buyers:

1. From a functional point of view, the Wave is absolutely comparable (check the Leatherman website where you can do side-by-side comparisons of different tools), and significantly cheaper. You may want to look into this.

2. Although aesthetically pleasing, the black handles actually feel rough, almost giving the sensation of running your fingernails down a chalkboard. I tried it for a week, hoping that I would get used to it - but I didn't, so I returned it and bought the Wave.

Personally, I am more comfortable with the usual smooth, metal finish typical of Leatherman tools. I don't think this affects the functionality of the tool in any way, but I was just not pleased with how it felt in the hand.

Not everyone may feel the same way, so if you are considering this purchase, I would try the... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite Leatherman, August 5, 2010

I have quite a few multitools eg. Super Tool 300, Charge TTi as well as Victorinox Spirit and Swisstool. Out of all those multitools my favorite is without a doubt the Charge ALX. The ALX is similar to the Charge TTi but has aluminum handle scales. The titanium on the TTi is supposed to higher end and premium material but it does not feel as good in my hands. It always felt and looked unfinished to me. The ALX on the other hand has smooth, comfortable aluminum scales that looks killer, like a premium quality knife. If scissors are a must then go for the Charge TTi. Personally I rarely use the scissors so the dual bit driver on the ALX is the perfect configuration for me. Its nice to always have a philips and flat head driver/allen key on you (since some jobs require both). Combined with the Leatherman bit kit the ALX is the most capable multitool Ive come across and can tackle most medium duty tasks.

I purchased this multi-tool after researching several multi tools. Ultimately, I decided on the charge largely due to the TNP youtube channel. Nutinfancy highly recommends it so I figured I'd give it a shot.

I am impressed with the overall quality and functionality of the product. All of the tools lock securely when in use and it is very sturdy. The flexibility of the additional bit set is a great feature. I also got the bit extender which allows me to use any standard driver bit with the tool. The bit set is a bit excessive for full every day carry, but I keep the extra bits and bit extender close by in the truck.

There are a couple of cons. When closing, it does not close as smoothly as I think it should. If you close one handle then the other it does well, but if you just fold it up like a normal user would, it binds up when the pliers are still open but against the handles and after applying a little more force it rapidly snaps closed instead of...
